Chuck Shapler is a retired Civil/Structural Engineer from Toledo,
Ohio, who spends winters in Clearwater Florida. Chuck built, and
still flies, experimental airplanes. He was widowed in 1995 and
decided to sell the home which contained his airplane building shop.
He then looked about for another hobby. Luckily he discovered
painting and digital photography. Although he has very little formal
art training he has attended numerous classes at Dunedin Fine Art
Center, Gulf Coast Museum of Art and attended several sessions at
the annual Kanuga, NC, watercolor Workshop.
Chuck came to art late in life following a successful career as a
consultant on the use of computers in solving various engineering
problems. The drafting associated with his early engineering
experience was always of special interest and enjoyment. Chuck now
uses his drafting experience to prepare very detailed drawings for
his watercolor paintings. He uses his digital camera to capture and
compose the subject. He has often said that he enjoys the drawing
probably more than the painting as he has complete control of the
drawing, whereas watercolor consistently proves that it has a mind
of its own.
In addition to his paintings, Chuck also creates digital photo art
by enhancing his photos to resemble watercolor paintings with the
use of computer software. During his travels he has photographed
many marine and architectural sites that he plans to someday paint.
Until he does paint them, he has used some of these photos to create
a beautiful art form that has met with great acceptance.
Giclée prints of his paintings and photo art are available for sale
from
American Frame. Contact Chuck for pricing and information
concerning his original watercolor paintings.
