Nancy E. McLean is a wildlife and equine artist from Northeast Ohio who specializes in pastel portraits of domestic and wild animals. She has exhibited in numerous juried shows throughout Ohio and in New York State. After studying art and art history at Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania, and receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art, she worked in oils for years before literally going back to the drawing board. She found an affinity for the process of drawing that had been lacking in her painting, and after working in black and white with quill pen and India ink for several years, she began to work in color with pastel chalk. Combining her love of animals with her passion for drawing proved to be the perfect formula. Her work is included in private and corporate collections and she has produced touching and lifelike portraits of many beloved pets and horses. In 2012, she ventured into the exciting new world of on-line publishing, creating a beautiful hard cover book of her horse drawings entitled “Heavenly Creatures: The Horse In Art and Words”. She also has a line of full-color notecards of her original artwork called “Doggerel”.

“I have drawn and painted many different subjects in my art career – people, landscapes, still lifes – but nothing inspires and excites me as much as animals. No other subject consistently lures me to my drawing board and rewards me as highly with the finished product. I need to be fully invested in both my subject and in the process of drawing itself, to feel excitement and anticipation every time I begin a new drawing, and to have those emotions carry through to the last stroke of chalk on the paper. Pastels are so beautifully suited for rendering the smoothness of a dog’s glossy coat, the rough texture of a lion’s mane, the deep and liquid eye of the horse. It is a ‘hands-on’ medium that allows a very direct relationship between artist and subject.”
