 Fine Art Photography

My art photographs are usually made at very close range -- from a foot away to virtually touching the subjects, -- and this proximity introduces some elements not found in images made from greater distances.

Very few of us gaze so intently at a flower that we see its unique, individual folds, color tonalities, pollen patterns -- even its unique flaws. My flower portraits are an invitation to contemplate this particular flower.

Although I call them “portraits,” these images are not made in a studio setting. I kneel in fields of flowers, patiently waiting for the breeze to subside so I can capture my subject at rest. As I wait, I go into a kind of altered state of consciousness in which I’m totally here now, and that’s what keeps me coming back for more.

Another favorite subject is “abstracts,” which can mean almost any objects photographed in such a way that their natures and uses become secondary to their colors, lines, textures and patterns. We can hardly stop ourselves from asking it, but “What is it?” is the wrong question to ask about an abstract. It’s the mysterious image your eye keeps being drawn back to. Enlarged and framed, it’s the one you never tire of.
